Basic Steps For How To Build A Solar Panel

Noted below is a summary of the steps required for how to build a solar panel. By following a step by step plan that clearly demonstrates what is required, even those who do not consider themselves diy enthusiasts can build a solar panel quickly and start saving money on buying ready made ones and having them installed plus also the saving in electricity bills.

  • Start With A Sheet Of Plywood

This is the base for the solar panel and once it has been cut to the shape required, apply  UV-ray protective varnish.

  • Wiring/Affixing & Connecting The Solar Cells

Apply flux with a special Rosin flux pen to the strips on your solar cells. This is required to ensure that when the ribbon tabs are soldered to the solar cells they will adhere completely so that the wiring will have a fail safe connection to the cells. Then it is a case of connecting all the solar cells together.

Once this has been achieved, fix them to the plywood panel with a small amount of silicon to achieve a secure bond. There will be two unattached wires hanging from the connected solar cells. Using a drill, create two holes in the plywood and feed the wires through and fill the gaps with silicon.

  • Making The Frame

The solar panels require to be covered with Plexiglas so a frame needs to be made.  Fix the timber frame to the plywood and attach with wood screws and to ensure it is waterproof use silicon to ensure a secure bond to the plywood. Secure the Plexiglas to the frame again with silicon and then with screws. Here is an important point…make sure the screw holes are drilled into the Plexiglas before attaching it to the frame as it could crack if this is not done.

  • Important Checking Procedure

Now that the solar panel has been built, it is very important to make an inspection of every inch of it to find any gaps. These gaps will allow moisture in so seal any that are found with silicon. Just accept that moisture may still get into the interior and therefore a small home should be drilled at the bottom to allow air to circulate and for any rain that does find its way in…a way out.

Materials For How To Build A Solar Panel

Don’t be put off learning how to build a solar panel because, as long as you have basic carpentry skills which can be learned quickly by following step by step instruction, it is actually quite simple. Materials will be available at home inprovement stores or on the various sites on the internet.

The first factor to consider for how to build a solar panel is in what direction does the sun shine. In the northern hemisphere, solar panels should face south in order to capture the maximum amount of sunlight each day. But if the roof of the structure on which you’ll be installing your solar panels doesn’t face south (or north in the southern hemisphere), just attach the solar panels to poles that have been installed in a location which does.

Major Materials/Tools Required:

  • Plywood sheeting
  • Plexiglass & cutters
  • UV-ray protective varnish
  • Solar Cells
  • Soldering iron gun
  • Wire cutters
  • Caulking gun & silicon caulk
  • Volt meter
  • Wire
  • Diode
  • Convertor from DC to AC

For calculating the number of solar cells required, 80 will normally produce 100 watts of electrical power. Use the volt meter to test the solar cells individually, noting the voltage each produces. It is important to determine the total amount of power that is required and design an arrangement of solar panels to best meet this requirement. In areas that get less direct sunlight, either more panels will be required or accept less of a power generating capacity.

Though most solar panels that you see are rectangular in shape, they do not need to be restricted to this design. Depending on the space that you have available, you can fashion the shape of each solar panel to fit the circumstances. And don’t think that solar panels can be used just for an electrical supply to a house. How about erecting one for the garden shed or garage, or to create a lighting system in the garden?

Once you learn how to build a solar panel, the possibilites for their use are greater than initially thought.

Introduction For How To Build A Solar Panel

If you are interested in how to build a solar panel then ensure you follow up your interest as the process is not as difficult as you might imagine. Even if you don’t have any experience in such matters, by using clear step by step instruction you will be able to achieve what you set out to do.

Solar panel power systems have the potential to replace fossil fuel-based energy as an effective means of powering homes. Sunlight is free and inexhaustible and the instalation and use of solar panels is gradually becoming an affordable option.

Solar panel power systems will keep producing electricity as long as the sun exists. The technology uses solar cells (photovoltaic cells) to convert the sun’s energy into direct current electricity. The solar cells used in most home solar power systems are arranged on a solar panel.

Using an energy converter, the sun’s energy is converted into electricity. There is no cost to use and it is a great way to protect the environment. The area where your house is located needs to be taken into consideration when planning instalation plus also the actual position of the solar panels. The amount of sunlight that can be converted into energy will depend on these factors. Though even on cloudy days energy can still be accumulated from the sun.

The type of solar panel used depends on the geographical area in which the system is installed. Concentrating solar collectors are those which have panels angled in such a way that they absorb a maximum amount of direct sunlight. Non-concentrating solar collectors can be used in areas where there is not as much direct sunlight, absorbing the sun’s energy from both direct and reflecting angles.

If more electricity is produced than required, then the surplus can be sold into the National Grid using an inverter to transform the DC electricity back to alternating current.

To mitigate the cost of instalation, the Government has incentives to meet part of the cost in order to make solar panels an even more attractive prospect for generating electricity for the home.
